Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal title length?
Google cuts titles by the space they take up, not by the number of letters. On desktop the title fits in about 600 pixels, which is 50 to 60 characters for most text. Wide letters (M, W, capitals) take up more space.
And the meta description?
About 920 pixels on desktop (roughly 2 lines, around 155 to 160 characters) and a little more on mobile. Text beyond that is shown with an ellipsis.
Does Google always use my title and description?
No. Google may rewrite the title and pick another part of the page as the description when it thinks it matches the search better. A clear title and description that are true to the content make it more likely they will be used.
Is the measurement exact?
It is an approximation: the tool measures the text in Arial at the sizes Google uses (20 px for the title and 14 px for the description, on desktop). Google changes its layout from time to time.
