Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

It's a proposed file, published in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) at llmstxt.org, to summarize a site in Markdown: what it is and which pages matter. The idea is to make it easier for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI tools to read.

What does the format look like?

An H1 title with the site name, a summary as a blockquote (line starting with >), optional free text and H2 sections with link lists in the format - [name](address): description. A section called Optional marks what can be skipped when space is short.

Do search engines and AIs use llms.txt?

It's a proposal, not an official standard, and there's no public confirmation yet that the major AI providers read it. It's cheap to make and doesn't hurt SEO, but it doesn't replace sitemap.xml, robots.txt and good content on your pages.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of the site, named llms.txt: example.com/llms.txt.

Is it really free?

Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no subscription and no usage limits. All Tools123 tools are free and run right in your browser.
