Frequently asked questions
How is the score calculated?
With Rudolf Flesch's Reading Ease formula (1948): 206.835 − 1.015 × words per sentence − 84.6 × syllables per word. The higher the score, the easier the text. Syllables are counted with a heuristic for English, so the result is a close estimate.
What score should I aim for?
80 to 100 is very easy, 60 to 80 is easy (plain English), 30 to 60 is difficult and below 30 is very difficult. Text for the general public, like websites and manuals, works best above 60.
How do I improve the score?
Split long sentences, prefer short, common words and use the active voice. The tool highlights the longest sentences so you can start with them.
Does readability affect SEO?
Not directly: Google doesn't use readability formulas as a ranking factor. But clear text keeps readers engaged, which helps indirectly.
