Frequently asked questions
What is sitemap.xml for?
It's the list of your site's pages in a format Google, Bing and other search engines read. It helps them discover new pages faster, especially on new or large sites or ones with few links between pages.
Do I need priority and frequency?
No. Google says it ignores the priority and changefreq tags and uses lastmod (the last modified date) when it's reliable. That's why the tool only includes the date, if you want it.
Is there a page limit?
Each sitemap can have up to 50,000 addresses and 50 MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split it into several files and list them all in a sitemap index.
How do I submit it to Google?
Upload the file to the site root (example.com/sitemap.xml), add the Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit the address under Sitemaps in Google Search Console.
