Speed reading: what it is for

Speed reading shows one word at a time in the same spot on the screen, a technique known as RSVP. Your eyes don't have to travel along the line, and the highlighted focus letter always stays in the same place, so you read faster.

Paste text or open a .txt file, choose the speed, how many words appear at a time, the font, size and background (light, dark or sepia). You can pause at punctuation, go back and forward 10 words, read in full screen and track progress and time remaining. At the end, the tool shows your actual average words per minute. The text stays in your browser.

How to use

  1. Paste the text or open a .txt file.
  2. Choose the speed, font and background.
  3. Tap Start (or press space) and keep your eyes on the highlighted letter.

When to use it

  • Training your reading speed.
  • Reading long articles with more focus.
  • Reviewing notes before exams.

Frequently asked questions

How does speed reading work?

The technique, called RSVP (rapid serial visual presentation), shows words one at a time always in the same spot on the screen. Your eyes don't have to jump from word to word along the line, which saves time. The focus letter, highlighted in color, always stays in the same place so your gaze doesn't move.

What speed should I use?

An average adult reads between 200 and 300 words per minute. Start a bit above your normal speed, like 300, and increase by 25 when you're understanding well. Above 500 words per minute, comprehension usually drops, especially with technical texts.

Can I go back if I miss something?

Yes. Use the back and forward 10 words buttons, or the arrow keys, and the space bar to pause and resume. Pausing at punctuation gives a short breather at the end of each sentence and helps comprehension.
