Frequently asked questions

How is the sunrise time calculated?

The tool uses the solar equations published by NOAA, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which calculate the sun's declination and the equation of time for the date. Sunrise and sunset are when the center of the sun is 0.833° below the horizon, which accounts for atmospheric refraction and the size of the solar disk. Accuracy is about 1 minute between latitudes 72° South and 72° North.

What is civil twilight?

It's the period when the sun is up to 6° below the horizon, before sunrise and after sunset. There's still enough light for most outdoor activities without artificial lighting.

What is the golden hour?

It's the stretch right after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low, up to about 6° above the horizon. The light is warm and soft, and photographers love it.
