UTM coordinate converter
Convert geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) to UTM and from UTM back to latitude and longitude, with zone, hemisphere, easting and northing, on the GRS 80 / WGS 84 ellipsoid, and see them in degrees, minutes and seconds too.
How to useLatitude and longitude to UTM
GRS 80 ellipsoid, practically identical to the WGS 84 used by GPS. Accepts decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and seconds.
UTM coordinate converter: what it is for
Convert latitude and longitude into UTM coordinates, with the zone, hemisphere, easting and northing in meters, and go the other way, from UTM to decimal degrees and to degrees, minutes and seconds. The zone is chosen automatically but can be forced. The calculation uses the GRS 80 ellipsoid, practically identical to the WGS 84 used by GPS.
The calculations run in your browser. Your location is used only if you tap the button, and nothing is sent to a server.
How to use
- Choose the direction of the conversion.
- Enter the coordinates.
- Copy the result in UTM or in degrees.
When to use it
- Using coordinates from topographic maps.
- Converting GPS points for projects.
- Studying cartography and geodesy.
Frequently asked questions
What are UTM coordinates?
UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) splits the Earth into 60 zones 6° of longitude wide and gives the position in meters: the easting (E), starting from 500,000 m at the zone's central meridian, and the northing (N), counted from the Equator. In the southern hemisphere, 10,000,000 m is added to the northing to avoid negative numbers.
Which UTM zones cover the United States?
The contiguous United States spans zones 10 to 19: the West Coast is in zones 10 and 11 and the East Coast in zones 17 to 19. Alaska and Hawaii are in other zones. The tool works out the zone automatically, but you can also force a neighboring zone.
Do GRS 80 and WGS 84 give the same result?
In practice, yes. GRS 80, the ellipsoid used by NAD83 and SIRGAS 2000, differs from WGS 84 by fractions of a millimeter. For work that needs centimeter accuracy, such as land surveying, use official surveying software.
Is it really free?
Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no subscription and no usage limits. All Tools123 tools are free and run right in your browser.
