Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters for?
They tag the link with the source of the visit. In Google Analytics 4 you can see, under Acquisition, how many visits and sales came from each source, medium and campaign, for example from your Instagram bio link or an email newsletter.
Which fields are required?
Always use utm_source (where: instagram, whatsapp, newsletter), utm_medium (the type: social, email, cpc) and utm_campaign (the name of the action: black-friday). utm_term and utm_content are optional, for a keyword and to tell ads or buttons apart.
Does capitalization matter?
Yes. For Analytics, Instagram and instagram are different sources. The tool lowercases everything and replaces spaces with hyphens to keep reports tidy.
Can I use UTM on internal links?
It's not recommended: a UTM on an internal link starts a new session in Analytics and wipes out the real source of the visit. Only use it on links pointing to the site from outside.
Is it really free?
Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no subscription and no usage limits. All Tools123 tools are free and run right in your browser.
