Frequently asked questions
What is the 401(k) limit for 2026?
Employees can contribute up to $24,500 in 2026. If you are 50 or older you can add a catch-up contribution of $8,000, and from age 60 to 63 the catch-up is $11,250. Employer contributions do not count toward your own limit.
How does an employer match work?
A common match is 50% of what you contribute up to 6% of your salary, or 100% up to 3% or 4%. Contributing at least enough to get the full match is like getting a raise.
What return should I use?
Long-term stock market returns have averaged around 7% a year after inflation in the past, but returns change every year and are not guaranteed. Try a lower rate to see a more conservative result.
