How do I add the 404 page to my site?
On most static hosts (Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Firebase) just save it as 404.html at the root. On Apache use ErrorDocument 404 /404.html in .htaccess; on Nginx, error_page 404 /404.html; on Google Cloud or AWS buckets, set the static website's error page.
Does the page need to respond with a 404 status?
Yes. If the server returns 200 on an error page, Google treats it as a soft 404 and may index addresses that don't exist. The setups above keep the 404 status; the noindex tag is extra protection.
What does a good 404 page have?
It clearly says the page doesn't exist, doesn't blame the visitor, keeps the site's identity and offers paths: back to home, search and the most popular links.
