Frequently asked questions
How far apart should fence posts be?
For barbed wire fences, 2 to 3 m (6 to 10 ft) between posts is common. For tensioned plain wire, posts can be farther apart, 5 to 10 m, with stays between them.
How many strands should I use?
For cattle, 4 to 5 strands of barbed wire is usual. For sheep and goats, more strands closer to the ground, or woven wire. For a simple boundary, 3 strands are usually enough.
How long is a roll?
The most common barbed wire rolls are 250 m or 500 m (about 1,320 ft). The calculator adds 5% extra for splices and ties.
