How much tile to buy?
Tile and flooring calculator: what it is for
Enter the area, the tile size and how many m² come in each box. The calculator adds the waste (10% straight, 15% diagonal) and shows how many tiles and boxes to buy.
It also estimates the thinset, with back-buttering for large tiles, and the grout using the manufacturers' formula, from the tile thickness and the joint width.

Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I allow?
About 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many cuts. Large tiles usually need a bit more.
How is grout calculated?
With the formula manufacturers use: (length + width) × tile thickness × joint width × 1.58 ÷ (length × width), with measurements in millimeters. The result is in kg per m².
What about thinset?
The estimate uses 5 kg/m² for single buttering and 9 kg/m² for back-buttering, recommended for tiles from 60 × 60 cm (24 × 24 in) and outdoor areas. Check the manufacturer's bag.
