Image map generator (clickable areas): what it is for

An image map turns parts of an image into links: the lots on a site plan, the stores in a mall, the parts of a product or the dishes on a menu. Choose the image and draw the areas by dragging (rectangle and circle) or clicking the corners (polygon).

For each area, enter the link and the alternative text. The code comes in the classic format, with map and area, or in the responsive version, with links positioned in percentages (and clip-path for polygons), which follows the image at any screen size. The image never leaves your browser.

How to use

  1. Choose the image.
  2. Draw the areas and fill in link and text.
  3. Choose the format and copy the code.

When to use it

  • Site plan or floor plan.
  • Store or event map.
  • Product photo with clickable parts.

Frequently asked questions

Do image maps work on phones?

The classic map with area uses pixel coordinates of the original image, so the areas end up in the wrong place when the image shrinks on a phone screen. That's why the generator also gives you the responsive version, with links positioned in percentages over the image, which follow any size.

Are the areas accessible?

Each area gets alternative text (alt or aria-label) saying where it leads. Fill in that text: it's what screen readers announce and what shows when the image doesn't load.

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image stays in your browser just so you can draw; the generated code points to the address you enter.

Is it really free?

Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no subscription and no usage limits. All Tools123 tools are free and run right in your browser.
