Frequently asked questions
How is the periodic table organized?
The elements follow the order of their atomic number, which is the number of protons. The rows are the 7 periods, which indicate the number of electron shells, and the columns are the 18 groups or families, which bring together elements with similar properties.
Which families have names?
Group 1: alkali metals. Group 2: alkaline earth metals. Group 17: halogens. Group 18: noble gases. Groups 3 to 12 are the transition metals, and the lanthanides and actinides are in the two bottom rows.
Why do some elements have a mass with no decimals?
They are radioactive elements with no stable isotope. In those cases the mass number of the most stable known isotope is shown.
