Testimonials section for websites (HTML and CSS): what it is for

Customer testimonials show that other people have already trusted your work. Write one per line (name, city or role, stars, text and an optional photo) and get the section ready, in a grid or a side-scrolling carousel, with a light or dark background and your brand color.

Without a photo, the customer's initials appear. The stars have alt text for screen readers. The code does not include Review markup because since 2019 Google does not show stars for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site; the page explains this and reminds you to ask permission to publish names and photos.

How to use

  1. Write the testimonials, one per line.
  2. Choose the layout, background and color.
  3. Copy the code into your site.

When to use it

  • Service provider home page.
  • Course or product landing page.
  • Sales page.

Frequently asked questions

Do testimonials make stars show up on Google?

No. Since 2019 Google does not show stars for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own website (it calls them 'self-serving' reviews), even with structured data. That is why the code does not include Review markup. Stars on Google come from the reviews on your Business Profile.

Can I use Google reviews on my site?

You can show excerpts of public reviews with the name the customer used, noting that they come from Google. For full names and photos, it is best to ask for permission, as privacy laws require for personal data.

Grid or carousel?

With up to six testimonials, the grid shows everything at once and works best. The side-scrolling carousel fits more testimonials without making the page long, but many people do not scroll sideways, so put the best ones first.
