Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between short-term and long-term?

Assets held for one year or less are short-term and the gain is taxed like ordinary income (10% to 37%). Assets held for more than a year are long-term and get the lower 0%, 15% or 20% rates.

What are the 2026 long-term rates?

For single filers: 0% up to $49,450 of taxable income, 15% up to $545,500 and 20% above. For married couples filing jointly: 0% up to $98,900, 15% up to $613,700 and 20% above. Head of household: 0% up to $66,200 and 15% up to $579,600.

What is the net investment income tax?

An extra 3.8% on investment income when your modified AGI is above $200,000 (single or head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

What if I sold at a loss?

Losses offset gains first. If losses are larger, you can deduct up to $3,000 a year against other income and carry the rest forward.
