Cattle weight gain calculator (ADG)
Calculate cattle average daily gain (ADG) between two weighings, the arrobas (15 kg of carcass) produced in the period and how many days are left until the animal reaches slaughter weight.
How to useAverage daily gain and slaughter forecast
The slaughter forecast assumes the daily gain stays the same as in the measured period.
Cattle weight gain calculator (ADG): what it is for
With the weight and date of two weighings, the calculator shows the average daily gain (ADG), the gain per month, the arrobas (15 kg of carcass) produced in the period and a forecast of how many days are left for the animal to reach slaughter weight, with the estimated date, plus the arrobas expected at slaughter from the carcass yield.
The calculations run in your browser: no farm data is sent to or stored on a server.
How to use
- Enter the weights and dates of the two weighings.
- Set the slaughter weight and carcass yield.
- See the ADG and the slaughter forecast.
When to use it
- Tracking weight gain on pasture or in the feedlot.
- Comparing supplements and management.
- Planning when to sell the animals.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate ADG?
Average daily gain is the difference between the final and initial weight divided by the number of days between weighings. A steer that went from 300 to 390 kg in 120 days gained 90 kg, or 0.75 kg per day.
What is a good ADG?
It depends on the system. On pasture without supplements, gains of 0.3 to 0.6 kg per day are common, and in feedlots animals usually exceed 1.2 kg per day. Dry season, pasture quality and genetics make a big difference.
How do I know how many arrobas the animal produced?
Multiply the live weight gain by the carcass yield and divide by 15 (one arroba is 15 kg of carcass, the unit used in the Brazilian cattle market). With a 52% yield, 90 kg of gain becomes 46.8 kg of carcass, or about 3.1 arrobas.
