Frequently asked questions
Why does paying the minimum take so long?
Credit cards charge a high APR, often above 20%. With a small payment, most of it goes to interest and the balance barely moves. Paying even a little more each month cuts years and a lot of interest.
How is credit card interest calculated?
Cards charge interest daily on the balance, at the APR divided by 365. This calculator uses the monthly equivalent (APR ÷ 12), which gives a very close estimate.
Should I pay off the highest rate or the smallest balance first?
Paying the highest APR first (avalanche) saves the most interest. Paying the smallest balance first (snowball) gives quicker wins. Both work if you stick to them.
