Drywall calculator: what it is for

Enter the length and width of the room and the wall height in feet. Choose whether to include the ceiling, how many doors and windows to subtract and the sheet size. The calculator shows the total area, the number of sheets with the waste you choose, and estimates of joint compound, tape and screws.

The material estimates use common rules of thumb and are meant for budgeting; your installer may use more or less depending on the layout and finish level.

How to use

  1. Enter the room size and wall height.
  2. Choose the ceiling, openings and sheet size.
  3. Read the sheets and materials.

When to use it

  • Finishing a basement.
  • Remodeling a bedroom.
  • Garage and addition projects.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate drywall sheets?

Add up the area of the walls (perimeter × wall height) and the ceiling (length × width), subtract doors and windows, and divide by the area of one sheet: 32 sq ft for 4×8, 40 for 4×10 and 48 for 4×12. Add 10 to 15% for cuts and waste.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

Yes for the sheet count, but many installers subtract only part of the openings, since the pieces cut out are often too small to reuse. This calculator subtracts them and then adds the waste percentage you choose.

How much joint compound and tape do I need?

Estimates vary with the product and the finish level. A common planning figure is one 4.5 gallon box of all-purpose compound for about 475 sq ft of drywall (all three coats), around 370 feet of paper tape per 1,000 sq ft (tape comes in 500 ft rolls) and about 32 screws per 4×8 sheet on walls, a few more on ceilings. Check the coverage chart on the compound you buy.
