EV charging time and cost calculator: what it is for

Enter the usable battery, from what to what percentage you'll charge, the charger type and the price per kWh. The calculator uses the lower of the charger's power and the car's limit (AC or DC), assumes 90% efficiency on AC and 95% on DC and, on fast charging, lowers the power above 80%.

The result shows the time, the cost of the charge, the energy drawn from the grid, the range added from the car's consumption and the cost per 100 km.

How to use

  1. Enter the car's usable battery and the start and end percentages.
  2. Choose the charger and check the car's AC and DC limits.
  3. Enter the rate and the consumption to see time, cost and range added.

When to use it

  • Know how much your electric bill goes up charging at home.
  • Plan charging stops on a road trip.
  • Compare a regular outlet, a wallbox and a fast charger.

Frequently asked questions

Why does fast charging slow down after 80%?

To protect the battery, the car cuts power a lot near the end. On DC fast chargers, charging from 80% to 100% can take almost as long as from 10% to 80%. The calculator lowers the power above 80% to reflect this.

Does a 22 kW charger charge at 22 kW?

Only if the car accepts it. On AC, the limit is the car's onboard charger, usually 6.6 to 11 kW. Enter your car's AC and DC limits for an accurate result.

How much is lost while charging?

Between 5% and 15% of the energy becomes heat in the cables, charger and battery. The calculator uses 90% efficiency on AC and 95% on DC: the cost is based on the energy drawn from the outlet.

Which rate should I use?

At home, the price per kWh on your electric bill including taxes. At public stations, the network's price per kWh in its app, which is usually much higher than home rates.
