Gas cost trip calculator: what it is for

Enter the distance in miles, your car's fuel economy in miles per gallon and the price of gas. The calculator shows the gallons needed, the total fuel cost, the cost per mile and, with your tank size, how many fill-ups the trip takes. Turn on round trip to double the distance and enter tolls and the number of people to split the cost.

It also converts if you only know the fuel economy in liters per 100 km.

How to use

  1. Enter the miles and MPG.
  2. Enter the gas price, tolls and people.
  3. Read the total and the share per person.

When to use it

  • Planning a road trip.
  • Splitting gas money with friends.
  • Comparing driving with flying.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate gas cost for a trip?

Divide the miles by your car's MPG to get the gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 300 mile trip in a car that gets 30 MPG uses 10 gallons; at $3.50 a gallon it costs $35.

Which MPG should I use?

Use the highway MPG for long trips on the interstate and the combined MPG for a mix of city and highway. Your real MPG drops with heavy loads, a roof box, high speeds, headwinds and running the AC.

How do I split gas money with friends?

Divide the total gas cost by the number of people sharing the ride. Add tolls and parking to the total if you split those too.
