Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income, the bracket you are in. The effective rate is your total tax divided by your income. Because each bracket only taxes the income inside it, the effective rate is always lower.
What is the 2026 standard deduction?
$16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household. You can itemize instead if your deductions are larger.
Does moving to a higher bracket lower my take-home pay?
No. Only the income above the bracket limit is taxed at the higher rate. A raise always means more money after federal income tax.
