Frequently asked questions
What does rebalancing a portfolio mean?
Over time, the assets that rise the most take up a bigger slice than planned, and the portfolio becomes riskier or more conservative than you wanted. Rebalancing means buying what is below target and, if needed, selling what is above it, to get back to the percentages you set.
Is it better to sell or just add money?
Rebalancing only with new contributions avoids selling, costs and taxes on gains. The "no selling" option splits the contribution among the classes that are below target, bringing the portfolio closer to the target allocation.
How often should I rebalance?
Many investors rebalance once or twice a year, or when a class drifts more than a few percentage points from its target. This tool is not investment advice.
