Roof tile calculator: what it is for

Enter the length and width of the covered area, including the eaves, and the roof pitch. The calculator corrects the area for the pitch, applies the average coverage per m² for the tile type (Roman, colonial, French, Portuguese, American, concrete or fiber cement) and adds the waste.

Coverage values are averages: check the manufacturer's value before buying.

How to use

  1. Type the measurements and the pitch.
  2. Choose the tile type.
  3. See how many tiles to buy.

When to use it

  • Budget a house roof.
  • Replace the tiles over a patio.
  • Compare tile types.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the pitch change the amount?

Because a sloped roof is bigger than the floor area it covers. With a 30% pitch, each horizontal meter becomes about 1.04 m of roof. The calculator corrects the area by that factor.

How many tiles go in a square meter?

It varies by model and manufacturer: about 16 tiles per m² for Roman and colonial clay tiles, 15 for French, 17 for Portuguese, 12 for American and 10.5 for concrete. Check the coverage on the package or with the supplier.

What is the minimum pitch?

In general, 30% to 35% for clay and concrete tiles and about 10% to 15% for fiber cement. Always follow the manufacturer's manual to avoid leaks.
