US phone number formatter and validator: what it is for
Paste a list of phone numbers from a spreadsheet, a form or a CRM export, in any format: with dots, dashes, spaces, parentheses, a leading 1 or +1, or extensions. Use E.164 for databases and SMS tools, (555) 123-4567 for websites and print, and tel: links for click-to-call buttons.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a US phone number valid?
Under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), a number has a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit local number. The area code and the exchange (the next 3 digits) can't start with 0 or 1, and N11 codes like 911 and 411 aren't used as area codes. A leading 1 is the country code.
What is E.164 format?
The international format used by phone systems, SMS services and CRMs: a plus sign, the country code and the number with no spaces, like +15551234567 for the US and Canada. Use it when you store numbers in a database.
Does this check if a number is in service?
No. It checks that the number follows the numbering rules, not whether someone is using it. Numbers with the 555-0100 to 555-0199 range are reserved for fiction and examples.
Is it really free?
Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no subscription and no usage limits. All Tools123 tools are free and run right in your browser.
