Add up employment periods: what it is for

Enter the start and end of each job, internship or freelance period. The calculator counts the calendar days of each one (including the first and last), merges overlapping periods so the same days are not counted twice and shows how many days were removed.

The total appears in days, in years with decimals and in years, months and days (365-day years and 30-day months). A period with no end date counts up to today, and the list is saved in your browser.

How to use

  1. Enter the start and end date of each period.
  2. Leave the end date blank for your current job.
  3. See the total time and copy the summary.

When to use it

  • Checking your years of service before retiring.
  • Adding up work experience for a résumé or job application.
  • Comparing your count with official employment records.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when two periods overlap?

The days in common are counted only once. Having two jobs at the same time does not double the time: the calculator shows how many overlapping days were removed.

How are days turned into years and months?

The calculator counts the calendar days of each period, including the first and last day, and converts the total using 365-day years and 30-day months, as is common in service time counts. That is why the result may differ by a few days from a count done on the calendar.

Can I use it for retirement?

Use it to check your own count. The time that counts for retirement benefits is what is in the official records (such as your Social Security earnings record in the US), which may have missing periods or differ from your own records.

What if I still work there?

Leave the end date blank: the calculator uses today's date.
