Frequently asked questions
Why is my bonus taxed so much?
Bonuses are supplemental wages, and most employers withhold federal tax at a flat 22% (37% on the part above $1 million in a year), plus Social Security, Medicare and state tax. It often feels high, but it is withholding, not your final tax.
Is a bonus taxed at a higher rate?
No. At tax time the bonus is added to your other income and taxed at your normal rates. If 22% was more than your real rate, you get the difference back in your refund.
Does Social Security apply to bonuses?
Yes, 6.2% until your total wages for the year reach $184,500 in 2026. Medicare (1.45%) applies to all of it.
