Online risk matrix (likelihood × impact)
Type one risk per line, with the likelihood and the impact from 1 to 5. The matrix puts each risk in the right square and sorts them from most to least severe.
How to useWhich risks to handle first
Online risk matrix (likelihood × impact): what it is for
Type each risk with its likelihood and impact from 1 to 5. The 5×5 matrix shows each risk in the right square of the heat map and lists them all, from most to least severe, with the level (low, medium, high or critical) and the score.
That way the team sees at a glance which risks need a plan and an owner.
How to use
- Type the risks with likelihood and impact.
- See the matrix and the sorted list.
- Download as PNG or SVG.
When to use it
- Project risk management.
- Workplace and event safety.
- Company planning.
Frequently asked questions
How do I score likelihood and impact?
Likelihood: 1 is rare, 2 unlikely, 3 possible, 4 likely and 5 almost certain. Impact: 1 is insignificant, 2 minor, 3 moderate, 4 major and 5 severe. What matters most is that the team uses the same scale for every risk.
How is the risk level calculated?
By multiplying likelihood by impact, from 1 to 25. Here, 1 to 4 is low, 5 to 9 is medium, 10 to 16 is high and 17 to 25 is critical. Some companies use slightly different bands; what matters is handling the ones in the top right corner first.
What do I do with each risk?
For each one, pick a response: avoid it (change the plan so the risk no longer exists), reduce it (lower the chance or the impact), transfer it (insurance, contracts) or accept and monitor it. Critical and high risks need a plan and an owner.
