Frequently asked questions

How do I write the activities?

Give each step a short id and put the text in square brackets: pack[Pack the products]. Decisions go in curly braces: stock{In stock?}. Then connect them with arrows: pack --> ship, and with text on the arrow: stock -- yes --> pack.

How do I make the start, the end and the parallel bars?

The example already has all three: start@{ shape: f-circ } is the filled start circle, end@{ shape: fr-circ } is the end circle and fork1@{ shape: fork } is the bar that opens or joins paths that happen at the same time.

How is it different from a flowchart?

They are similar. The activity diagram is the UML one, used in systems analysis, and has its own symbols for start, end and parallel activities. A flowchart is freer and common for business processes.
