UML use case diagram maker: what it is for

Type the system name and one line for each link between an actor and a use case. Actors for external systems can go on the right side, and include and extend relationships get their own arrows.

How to use

  1. Type the system name in square brackets.
  2. Connect the actors to the use cases.
  3. Download the diagram as PNG or SVG.

When to use it

  • Requirements document.
  • Software engineering coursework.
  • Agreeing on scope with the client.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write the diagram?

The first line, in square brackets, is the system name. Then one line per link: Customer -> Place order connects the actor to the use case, with the actor on the left of the drawing. To put an actor on the right, like an external system, write it the other way around: Place order <- Payment gateway.

How do I add include and extend?

Use case => another use case draws an «include» (the first always uses the second, like Place order => Pay). Use case ~> another use case draws an «extend» (the first adds something optional to the second, like Apply coupon ~> Place order).

What is a use case diagram for?

To show, on one page, who uses the system and what each one can do in it. It is one of the first diagrams in requirements analysis, good for agreeing on scope with the client before detailing each case.
