Frequently asked questions
What is 1RM?
It is the heaviest weight you can lift a single time with correct form. It is used as a reference to build percentage-based programs, like 75% of 1RM for sets of 8 to 10 reps.
Which formula is most accurate?
They are all estimates and work best up to 10 reps. Epley and Brzycki give similar results between 2 and 10 reps; the calculator shows the average of the three.
Is it safe to test a true 1RM?
Max tests require warming up, good technique and a spotter. For most people, estimating 1RM from a set of 3 to 8 reps is safer.
