How much state income tax will I pay?

Frequently asked questions
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages. Washington does tax large capital gains.
What is a flat tax state?
A state that charges the same rate on all taxable income, like Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Utah. The calculator fills in the 2026 rate for these states.
How do progressive states work?
States like California, New York and New Jersey have brackets, so the rate rises with income. For them, enter the effective rate you expect (your state tax divided by your income last year is a good guide) or check your state's tax tables.
Are local taxes included?
No. Some cities and counties (New York City, many Ohio and Pennsylvania towns, Maryland counties) add a local income tax on top of the state tax.
